Moving to Mattapoisett: Your First 30 Days Checklist
The administrative first week
- Register your vehicle and update your license with your new Mattapoisett address, through the Massachusetts RMV.
- Register to vote locally, if you plan to, through the Town Clerk's office.
- Set up utilities, confirming what is town-provided versus private, water and septic arrangements are not uniform across every property here.
- Register children for school with the local school district, if applicable, as early as possible to get ahead of any enrollment steps.
Weeks two and three: getting your bearings
Spend time at the Town Wharf and Shipyard Park, the center of a lot of Mattapoisett's day-to-day life. Find your grocery and errand routine, most of what you need day to day is a short drive between Mattapoisett and neighboring Fairhaven. If you are near the water, confirm your flood zone and insurance situation early rather than waiting for a renewal notice to surprise you.
By week four: starting to feel local
Most new residents start recognizing familiar faces around the village by the one-month mark, Mattapoisett is small enough that this happens faster than people expect coming from a larger town. If you have not yet, introduce yourself to neighbors directly rather than waiting for a formal occasion; it is how this town actually works.
